This song came to me in all of 15 minutes, sitting in the sunroom porch one late April day. Once I got it all down I ran in to show Alex & Sam and they liked it so much that we recorded it on the spot. After we had put down the first track, we sat together around a mic to overdub the guitars. Sam & I played acoustic guitar, while Alex played the banjo. For some strange, unfamiliar reason, Alex & I began crying while we played. Neither of us noticed the other one doing it until the take was done. It was something strongly spiritual that resonated through those chords into the room, and between us. It was chilling, and it was unspoken. It was right there that we knew that we had finished writing the album and that this was its last song.
Amen.
lyrics
A picture of you in the hallway of my head
Makes it hard to live around here
There's a dark horse ever since you disappeared
I should ride away on that
I'll drive the reins all the way down to the water
& watch the foam rise from the sea
A bright vacancy sign on the bed we used to stay in
Makes it hard to sleep at night
There's a black dog ever since you left
& it's chewing at my leg
I wanna walk it down to Rue Morgue Avenue
& leave it tied up to a post
I wish I could forget you
But then I know I wouldn't remember
All the good nights that we had together
Staying up & drinkin' wine !
